Sinusitis: complications

While sinusitis is relatively harmless and goes away in a few days to weeks, several complications can still come about with persistent symptoms that gradually get worse.

  • Increased frequency of asthma attacks
  • Chronic sinusitis – acute sinusitis can develop into a chronic condition that lasts longer than 8 weeks
  • Meningitis – if an infection develops in the sinus cavities, it can be very dangerous because of the risk of spreading to the lining of the brain
  • Vision problems – if an infection spreads to the eye socket and its surrounding tissue, a person can experience sudden vision problems
  • Ear infection – this is by far the most common complication of respiratory problems because of the proximity of the ear canal and internal structures to the respiratory passages
